Congrats from Dept. of Ed for Fern Creek’s “exceptional gains”

Everyone loves to get mail. But we were especially excited to open the following letter recently from the Kentucky Department of Education about the great strides we’re making here at Fern Creek with our tests scores. Great job, Fern Creek High!

Dear Dr. Barber,

We extend to you and the teachers, staff and students of Fern Creek High School our most sincere congratulations regarding your 2009-2010 Kentucky Core Content Test results. Your school’s achievement gains are important because of what they represent. These gains mean a greater percentage of students now have the skills and knowledge to succeed in college and/or a career. That certainly deserves congratulations and much more.

Your growth in Math and Reading Combined Proficient/Distinguished percentages demonstrates that a small group of people with the right leadership, an effective plan and the dedication to see positive outcomes for students can get positive results.

We encourage you to continue striving for growth in each student’s performance. Your school’s exceptional gains have led Fern Creek High School to exceed the state average in both math and reading proficient/distinguished performance. We believe you will continue to excel.

Congratulations on your scores and we look forward to even greater results in the future.

 Sincerely,

Terry Holliday, Ph.D., Commission of Education

 Dewey Hensley, Ph.D., Associate Commissioner

Parent/Teacher Conferences An Important Tool

The students got to sleep in again today, but important things are happening at the Creek on this Tuesday! We’re about to wrap up a productive morning of Parent/Teacher Conferences. It is always exciting to have our family members in the school, especially when they are meeting with our faculty and staff to make sure our students are on the road to success.

If you haven’t signed up yet for this afternoon, call the office at 485-8251. This is a team effort and we need and want parent involvement.

Have a great Tiger Day!

A true American Hero visits the Creek

We are honored to have Sergeant Major Allan Kellogg, Jr. on our campus today speaking to an assembly of our JROTC cadets and other students. He is a true American Hero. One of only 85 living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor bestowed on an individual in the Armed Services.

Sergeant Major Kellogg was a Marine in Vietnam who threw himself on an enemy hand grenade to save the men around him. Thankfully after many months in the hospital he survived. After a 30 year career as a U.S. Marine, he’s still working for the Veterans’ Administration, helping veterans who are in prison. He MAY retire in three years after 50 years of service to our country.

He encouraged our students to stay in school, focus on the tasks at hand, and to never settle for less than your best effort. We are forever in the debt of Sergeant Major Kellogg and all the men and women who guarantee our freedom with their service and their sacrifice. Thank you.
